Intracameral Administration of Different Concentrations of Autonomic Drugs

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum concentrations of atropine, tropicamide and pilocarpine solutions which can be used as effective mydriatics or miotics with the fewest occurenses of untoward side effects.
A total of 72 eyes of mature albino rabbits weighing 2 Kg each was used in this study. The experimental eyes were divided into 3 drug groups and 0.05m1 of 0.25%, 0.5% and 1% solutions of the respective drugs were injected into the anterior chambers. Then, the transverse diameters of pupils were measured and any side effects were observed.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. Mydriatic effect was gradually reduced as the concentrations of the atropine solutions were decreased.
2. In the tropicamide group, the maximal diameter of the pupil gradually decreased and the duration of mydriasis shortened as the concentrations of the drug, were decreased, but the required time for the maximal diameter to occur was shortened significantly as the concentrations were lowered.
3. Miotic effect decreased gradually as the concentrations of the pilocarpine solutions were decreased.
4. The side effects were lessened or even disappeared as the concentrations of each drug were decreased.
